RIVERVIEW - The Brandon area baton twirling organization Let's Twirl has returned as the 2007 AAU Junior Olympic National Baton Twirling champion team.

Let's Twirl members competed in the Amateur Athletic Union's Junior Olympic National Baton Twirling Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

The national championships featured teams and individual athletes from more than 25 states.

June Bryan, the AAU's national baton twirling director for the event and coach of Let's Twirl, said she was extremely proud of her participants.

'We earned 100 team medals, 30 being gold. We also earned 88 solo medals including, 31 gold, 27 silver, 17 bronze and 13 copper,' Bryan said.

For the past year, Let's Twirl participants have practiced team and solo twirling routines. The school offers competitive team training and individual solo instruction, including Solo 1 Baton, Solo 2 Baton, Multiple Baton, freestyle, hoop, flag, duet and trio.

The students also learn military and basic marching, as well as different types of struts.

The competition season begins in February with the Florida State Fair baton competition. Other competitions include Miss Majorette of Florida, Florida All-star Classic and the Florida State AAU Junior Olympics qualifier.

Participants of Let's Twirl also have marched in the Macy's Holiday Parade at Universal Studios, at an Orlando Magic basketball game in Orlando and at the Children's Gasparilla Parade.

Let's Twirl offers classes at two locations. Fall registration is from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Osprey Club in FishHawk Ranch, 5721 Osprey Ridge Drive, Lithia, and Aug. 29 at the Winthrop Pole Barn, 11349 Bloomingdale Ave., Riverview.
