BRANDON - A bone marrow drive for Brandon's Brooke Longwell Brantley, a 33-year-old single mom with three young children, is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 in the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel, 1880 State Road 60 East. Brooke was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia – an aggressive form of cancer – last year.
She is currently being treated at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. A bone marrow transplant could save her life, according to doctors.
Organizers are also looking for volunteers to be tested and go on the donor list. Donors must be aware that if they agree to be tested and they aren't a match for Brooke, they may be a match for someone else.
The family also hopes to defray the $52 per test cost. Florida Blood Services has been able to reduce that cost to $25 for the first 50 donors.
"We are trying to eliminate all cost to the donors so more people can participate. To eliminate that fee would total $1,250," said the family in a release.
Any size donation will be accepted. Checks should be made out to Florida Blood Services with Brantley Marrow Drive written in the memo part of the check.
