Justin Quillen scored a hat trick as Freedom beat Newsome Blue 5-3, giving the Wolves their first loss in the Hillsborough High School Hockey League.

Newsome took a first-period lead through Zach VandeLagemaat, but Freedom bounced back to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period on goals by Barry Preusch and Quillen.

Quillen added his second midway through the third period, but Kyle Riegler pulled a goal back for the Wolves to make the score 3-2. Spencer McNabb restored the Patriots' two-goal advantage shortly after, but Riegler again found the net with 48 seconds to play.

Quillen finally put the game away with 16 seconds to play, completing his hat trick with an empty-net goal.

Newsome remains on top of the league standings, and holds a three-point lead on the Tigers after Wharton's George Prieto led the Wildcats to a 3-1 win against the Tigers.

Adam Christian also scored for the Wildcats, who moved into fifth. Ryan Romanson scored the only goal for the Tigers, who are one point ahead of Freedom.

Riverview/Durant remained in fourth after a 10-3 win against Wesley Chapel.

Team leading scorer Joey Heyer scored a hat trick for the combined team, while Nick Feira and Jason Wayne each scored twice. Chris Lifreiri had a pair of goals for the Ice Cats.

Plant won its second game of the season 4-0 against Newsome White to put the Panthers within a point of moving out of last place.

Kyle Page recorded the shutout, while Justin Bramm, Mikel Amias and Michael Agana scored.
George Jenkins outscored Bloomingdale 9-7. Brendon Baker, Jason Jensen and Kevin Wagner each scored twice to counter Bloomingdale's Connor McHale, who had a hat trick. Dan Briggs also had a pair of goals for the Bulls, while Jenkins' Natalie Weinstein scored her first goal of the season.

RSL Girls Win Shootout

RSL Florida's girls under-18 team won all three of its games to win the Purple Division at the CASL Shootout in Raleigh, N.C.

The shootout, which had 14 divisions in the under-18/19 class, is considered one of the premier events in the club soccer calendar.

RSL opened with a 2-0 win against FC Delco from Pennsylvania and followed with a 3-0 win against Ankeny Premier from Iowa and a 3-1 win against Evansville, Ind.

The team only took 15 players, leaving some who had already committed to college home so others could get a chance at being noticed by college coaches. The approach paid off for senior Katie Kent and junior Alexi Rakestraw.

"Alexi Rakestraw really had a great weekend in the center-midfield," Coach Jim Cote said. "A lot of schools inquired about her, and it really got kicked off for spring to get herself committed to college, and Katie Kent had an outstanding weekend. She scored two or three goals, but played really well."

Kent had played as a forward before joining RSL, but Cote moved her to wing.

"She made a decision about a month ago that she wants to play the next four years," Cote said. "She was with another club, where she was kind of their best player and then she came to us last year, did OK in our state cup run. ... She had been a forward all her life, but we had Chelsea Klotz and Noelle Pineiro so now she was going to play right-mid, and she fought us on that a little in the fall.

"I think about a month ago she made the decision 'Wherever they're going to put me, I'm just going to do whatever they ask and work my tail off for my teammates.' I give her a lot of credit for doing those things sometimes to change her way of playing and learn how to play in a new spot. Assistant coach Chris Brown and I were very pleased with her that she sucked it up and did what we asked."

RSL's under-18 led a strong weekend by all the club's teams, as the four posted an overall record of 9-3, with the under-15, under-16 and under-17 teams all going 2-1.

"It was a good weekend as a club," Cote said. "I don't know if anyone else did that well as a club, and then the 18s just played very well."

Hillsborough County United's under-18s weren't as successful in the Pink Division, losing their opening two games, 1-0 to the Chicago Fire and 4-2 to the Kansas City Metro Dynamos, but Coach Danielle Fotopoulos said the team got a lot out of the event.

"I think the tournament in general, it was a success for our girls because it was a showcase," Fotopoulos said. "There were a lot of colleges there that got to see all the girls on the team, so in that aspect, it was successful."

HCU did get a win out of its final game, beating FC Frederick from Maryland 4-3 to finish third in their group. Fotopoulos said the team, led by Chelsea Hearne and Jo Dragotta, will be able to build on the tournament as they prepare for the Orange Classic in Miami at the end of the year.

"I think they took away some really good experience of playing at a higher level," Fotopoulos said. "They've been playing high school soccer, so I think they really appreciated games passing and combining together."

The Clearwater Chargers finished second in the Seafoam Division. The Chargers came close to winning their bracket, but lost 2-1 to Quickstrike FC from New York in their final game, allowing the New Yorkers to jump them in the standings.

The Chargers had played to a 0-0 draw in their opener against the Concorde Fire from Georgia, before they beat the Beach FC Piranhas from Virginia 3-2 in their second game, putting them on top of the group standings.
