Even though John Dunlap was aiming at his first lifetime sanctioned league perfect game and Marc Weaver was lining up for No. 10, the feeling was mutual going into that decisive 10{+t}{+h} frame.
Nervousness never entered into either bowler's body.
That malady that affects so many bowlers after nine straight strikes was an afterthought.
"I was so confident after shooting 268 in the first game," said Weaver, bowling at Oakfield Lanes, "and I knew my shot was there. I just hoped the lanes held up and I didn't have to adjust. I just picked the speed up a bit."
Then, "after getting the first two strikes in the third game, I suddenly couldn't carry. I was leaving single pins. I went into the 10{+t}{+h} frame needing a double for my third 800 series and I got it."
The finishing 238 produced an 806 series and raised his average to 224.
Dunlap accomplished his perfect game at Brandon Crossroads the hard way, waiting until the third game when lane conditions drastically change.
"I didn't seem nervous at all," Dunlap said. "I have had eight strikes in a row at least three other times, but this time finally got past the ninth frame."
The 300 came after games of 247 and 168 for a 715 series.
"After an absence of 15 years, I got back into bowling four years ago because of my son Chris," Dunlap said. "He's a very good bowler and has a high series this year of 770."
