RUSKIN - A winter vacation day camp with a Be a Citizen Scientist theme will be held for children ages 7 to 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Camp Bayou, 4140 24th St. S.E.
The first half of the day will be devoted to learning about the pre-Columbian history of the area, including making pinch pots or weaving baskets, working in a simulated archaeological dig and learning to take accurate notes and photographs.
The second half of the day will include netting aquatic insects and tracking wildlife. Participants will make equipment for monitoring wildlife in their yards.
Cost is $75 per child per day. Participants must pre-register and bring their lunch.

Families To Learn About Nature
RUSKIN - Families are needed to observe and monitor the critters at Camp Bayou, so a free Family Naturalist Program will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturdays in January at Camp Bayou, 4140 24th St. S.E.
On Jan. 5, families will learn what a naturalist is, count butterflies and, as a service project, weed a habitat.
On Jan. 12, they will learn what biological indicators are, count aquatic invertebrates and pick up trash.
On Jan. 19, they will hear about keystone species, hunt for gopher tortoise burrows and make signs to mark them.
On Jan. 26, a classroom talk will inform families about biodiversity and include an activity about identifying and growing native plants and removing invasive ones.

Camp Bayou, a partnership of the Ruskin Community Development Foundation and the Hillsborough County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, is three miles south of State Road 674 at the end of 24th St. S. E.
'Faith County' Auditions Set At Village Chapel
BRANDON - Stagedoor Performing Arts will hold auditions for "Faith County" at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Limona Village Chapel Fellowship Hall, 408 Limona Road, Brandon. The comedy, originally made for radio, is set at a county fair, where people compete in poetry readings, cake baking and crafting appliqued toilet seat covers.
Performances will be at Limona Village Chapel at 7:30 p.m. March 6-8 and 13-15. There will be a 3 p.m. matinee March 9.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Admission is free for ages 5 and younger. Members' prices are discounted by $2, and groups of 10 or more are eligible for discounted rates. Tickets may be purchased at www.ticketleap.com or by calling (813) 213-8783.
New Military Officers To Be Installed
TAMPA - The Tampa Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will hold a luncheon meeting at 11 a.m. Jan. 10 at the MacDill Air Force Base Officers' Club. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.
Officers and board members for the new year will be installed by retired Army Col. Warren S. Lacy, editor of "Military Officer Magazine." Warren also will be the guest speaker at the installation meeting.
