Around the Arts for the New Year

Published: January 10, 2007

Last week I mentioned 2006 leaving with a roar instead of a whimper. If the first month of this year is any example of what great art events are in store for us, we're in for an exciting and adventurous ride!

Thanks to the Sumi-ink paintings of Korean artist Sun Nam Kim, Center Place starts the month with a slam-dunk. Kim's show will call Center Place home throughout January.

Not to be overlooked is the highly unusual two-woman show "Pam Patton Squared," featured at Center Place throughout February. Both artists share the same name -- one lives in Temple Terrace and the other lives in Riverview. An additional twist is that both artists each completed a painting every day for 30 days on the same size canvas, some on the same subject. There will be an open-to-the-public reception Sunday, Feb. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m.

One of our yearly highlights is the annual International Miniature Show. Held at the Leepa-Rattner Museum in Tarpon Springs, some 10,000 visitors from around the world will attend. The Greater Brandon area, home to a large representation of artists accepted into this extremely competitive juried exhibit, may have an artisan that just steal the show.

Many of the artists selected from our area are Brandon league members, giving credence to the number of world-class artists in our back yard. Yvonne Crissey, Judith Johnson, Carlene Earl, Peggy Little, Suzanne Dye, Meletha Everett, Melinda Albritton and Angela Santos are just a few who will be showing their works.

The 32nd Annual International Miniature 2007 Show to the public on Jan. 14 at 1 p.m., and it is one of the few places where paintings are viewed through a magnifying glass. The museum is situated on the St. Petersburg College Campus on 600 Klosterman Road and US 19. Phone: (727) 712-5762.

Fasten your seatbelts art lovers, 2007 has a lot more on the way!
