Newsome Blue got a pair of goals by Tom Kowalski, while teammates Zach VandeLaagemaat and Brendan Rhoney each had a goal and two assists as the Wolves beat Wharton 6-2 in the Hillsborough High School Hockey League.

The win was Newsome's first against the Wildcats in more than a year. Wharton won all three games between the teams last season, including the league championship game. Matt Cazes and George Prieto scored for the Wildcats.

The Tigers stayed in second place in the standings, but needed a shootout to beat Plant 1-0. Tigers goaltender Greg Lemrow and Plant's Max Okun both earned shutouts as the game ended scoreless in regulation, but Ian Stanley, Ryan McCaugherty and Erik Kortum each scored in the shootout for the Tigers, with only C.W. Guyer and Eric Siegman able to find the net for the Panthers.

The regulation tie earned the Panthers their first point of the season, while the Tigers remain three points behind Newsome Blue.

Freedom remained in contention with a 10-0 win against Bloomingdale as Shaun Dickinson had a hat trick. Justin Quiles and Barry Preusch each had a goal and three assists, while Chris Burt recorded the shutout.

Newsome White jumped over George Jenkins into fifth place with a 2-1 win against the Eagles. Jordan Farmar gave Jenkins an early first-period lead, but Newsome came back on second-period goals by Danny Mojica and Brendan McGowan.

The West Tampa Boxing Club had five fighters become state champions in Jacksonville last weekend, with the gym winning the team title in the process.

Ray Lugo led the way for the gym, as he won the under-16 division title at 138 pounds in the fifth bout of the night, defeating Jerry Hamby of Christian Warriors on points. Ricky Tomlinson soon followed, also winning the under-14, 80-pound title on points against Ariel Vega of the Golden Kids gym. Evander Lamourt also won on points, taking the under-16, 125-pound title against Josh Pastor of Hudson's gym.

Josh Medina (under-16, 145 pounds) and Steven Cross Jr. (under-14, 85 pounds) also won titles by walkover.

Rick Tomlinson Sr., who opened the gym in May with club president Steven Cross Sr. and trainers Sherman Henson, Stacy Maitani and Lenny Perez, was elated at the gym's fighters' success.

"When you win a state tournament like that with a gym that's only been open seven months, that's pretty good," Tomlinson Sr. said.

The gym was an offshoot of the Hurricane Gym in Ybor City, and now has more than 30 young fighters working out on a nightly basis. Cross and Tomlinson run the gym as a nonprofit organization, and the surge in the number of boxers wanting to train has been surprising to them, causing the gym to look for additional sponsors to help keep up with the number of kids who want to learn to box.

The club is now looking forward to the Florida Silver Gloves tournament, which will be held in West Palm Beach next month.

Panthers Novices Medal In Tennessee Regatta

Plant High's girls varsity 8 and novice 8 won took medals at the 26th Head of the Chattahoochee in Chattanooga, Tenn., last weekend. They were the first from the Panthers program to medal at what is billed as the second-largest regatta in the country.

The novice 8 won a silver medal in 20 minutes, 37 seconds. The crew of cox Abigail Eastridge, Parker Hodges, Catherine Formusa, Melissa Bennett, Garrison Hodges, Alexis Soyster, Cecilia Valeri, Amy Bennett and Rebecca Reddeck finished 11 seconds behind champion St. Andrews.

The varsity 8 finished fourth in 19:23. The crew of cox Aubrey Larson, Molly Hamrick, Sarah Smythe, Elle Murray, Luisa Isbell, Allie Clark, Ashley Bennett, Shirley Vogler and Ally Alemany finished 23 seconds behind champion St. Louis.

The results were an improvement on the Panthers' performances last year, and Plant coach Skye Elliott said he thought it was in part because the crew members have a greater familiarity with each other.

"Last year we had another group of women in the varsity," Elliott said. "We had a bunch of seniors and sophomores together, and they were all learning how to row together, learning each others' style, and we sacrificed some speed to move the boat as efficiently as possible.

"This year, I just think because we've started to assimilate themselves with each other, they've been able to pick up things a little quicker, and so we worked a lot more on the fitness aspect, making sure we were pulling hard."

Plant's boys lightweight 8 also finished strongly, taking fourth place in 17:01. The crew of cox Carly Heitlinger, Chris Halpern, Ryan Carley, Alex Tanner, Conor Howlett, Michael Pittman, Tanner Votaw, Martin McGowan and Oliver Mount finished 21 seconds behind the McCGPS crew as Winter Park and Upper Arlington filled out the top three.

Hillsborough High's 8 of Katie Burke, Leela Mundra, Madeline Kreher, Helen Latimer, Maggie Watson, Christie Smesko, Molly Morley, Maddy Cuono and cox Molly Samuels finished 18th in a time of 20:41, while Plant's 'B' crew finished 50 seconds farther back in 25th.

Hillsborough girls 4 of Burke, Kreher, Latimer and Cuono and Samuels finished 15th in 21:28.

Hillsborough will race one more time before entering its winter conditioning program to prepare for the spring season, racing today at the Sunrise Sprints on Lake Fairview.
