BRANDON - A nonprofit computer repair shop that refurbishes old equipment and distributes computers to families and schools that couldn't afford them on their own has a waiting list of about 100 names.
John Devine, owner of Devine Computer Solutions, hopes to shorten that list by Christmas.
His company is holding a fundraiser and computer drive Nov. 17, hoping people from across the region will turn in their old computers to be refurbished.
"We will be selling burgers and hot dogs, drinks, etc.," Devine said. "But, we will obviously be focusing on computer donations."
Devine takes in the donated machines, wipes the hard drives clean, installs software and distributes them to those who cannot afford computers. Many of the recipients are students.
Including parts and labor, Devine spends about $100 to get each computer in working order, he said. He charges a $10 fee for each monitor turned in to offset the cost of recycling.
Devine Computer Solutions is in the Sweetbay Plaza at Kingsway and Windhorst roads. Call (813) 685-2272.
