Published: October 3, 2007

BRANDON - A voter registration program targeting high school seniors netted 308 registrations recently at Armwood and Bloomingdale high schools.

The program is a joint effort by the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections and the county school district. Twice a year, staff members from the supervisor's office visit high schools to register students to vote.

By the end of October, every high school in the county will be visited.

Nearly 8,000 high school students have registered to vote since the program began in March 2006.

'Our mutual goal is to systematically educate Hillsborough County youth on the elections process and the importance of voting,' said Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson.

'I think a great deal of credit for the success of this program goes to the dedicated social studies teachers as it reflects their commitment to creating effective citizens,' said Dennis Holt, secondary education social studies supervisor for the school district.
