Pumpkin Fest To Aid Charity

Published: October 13, 2007

LITHIA - Newland Communities, developer of FishHawk Ranch, will hold an old-fashioned family pumpkin festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Information Center at 16144 Churchview Drive, complete with pumpkin carving and old-time sack races.

The event is open to the public and free, but donations will be accepted for various activities, and food tickets will be sold for refreshments to benefit HomeAid, a nonprofit provider of housing for the homeless, and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a leader in funding pediatric cancer research.

The festival is sponsored by Newland and Life is good, an apparel company that specializes in colorful clothing and accessories. The organizations are planning similar festivals in 11 Newland communities in seven states that will feature hundreds of carved pumpkins, painted faces and stuffed scarecrows.

Visitors may enter a pumpkin-carving contest, participate in arts and crafts with staff members from The Florida Aquarium, play bean-bag toss and other games and stuff a scarecrow.

The festival is the second annual event for Newland Communities. Last year the developer raised more than $400,000 for charities through the festivals held in a number of locations across the country. This year, Newland also is holding a Life is good pumpkin fest at its Mira Bay community in Apollo Beach.
