Luminarias To Light Up Neighborhoods
BRANDON - The Brandon branch of the American Association of University Women and the Lions Club of Brandon have teamed up to sell luminaria kits, ensuring 'Brandon area neighborhoods will be aglow on Christmas Eve as the tradition of lighting luminarias continues,' said Barbara Reed, Brandon AAUW publicity chairwoman.
This is the 28th year the AAUW has sold the kits, and the fifth year for the Lions. Each kit contains a dozen eight-hour votive candles and as many bags, matches, instructions and sand to anchor each luminaria. The kits are $5 each.
Lighting luminarias is a Mexican tradition that involves lighting candles on Christmas Eve to light the way of the Christ child.
'The tradition has continued to grow and helps unite neighborhoods and develops camaraderie among neighbors,' Reed said.
Money raised will enable the Lions to help organizations such as Leader Dogs for the Blind, Southeastern Guide Dogs, Florida Lions Camp for the Blind and Multi-handicapped Children, the Brandon Outreach Clinic and the Emergency Care Help Organization, also in Brandon.
Proceeds also will help the AAUW provide scholarships for girls and women, legal assistance for women facing gender bias in academia and treats at a table at the Halloween Horribles Parade at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association.
Orders for the luminarias will be taken through Nov. 15, and distribution and pick up will be Dec. 1. Neighborhoods that order at least 30 kits will receive free delivery.
