Published: October 20, 2007

The Hillsborough High rowing team had a strong showing in the county's opening meet of the season, winning all four races in the Head of the Hillsborough on Saturday. The regatta, which saw almost all the local teams compete, was held on the Hillsborough River.
Leading the way for the Terriers was the men's 8, which completed the 5,250-meter course in 19 minutes, 25 seconds. Unlike a sprint regatta, Saturday's event was solely against the clock, and the Terriers' time left them 1:55 ahead of runner-up Tampa Catholic.

'Saturday was more or less a practice race,' Hillsborough coach Mike Smith said. 'But it showed that we're executing pretty well. The kids have been doing a lot of work and endurance training so they could be working well. I had set certain stroke ratings, and they surpassed so I was pleasantly surprised.'

The men's 8 crew of cox Katie Murphy and crew Ben Garrett, Spencer Estes, Alex Sails, Charlie Snyder, Taylor Gonzalez, Jake Bourgeois, James Miles and Andrew Metziere also competed in separate boats in varsity four, where the two crews came in 1-2, the Terriers A crew edging out the B crew by three seconds in a time of 18:50.

The Terriers also won both of the girls events, with the varsity 8 crew of cox Molly Samuels and crew Katie Burke, Helen Latimer, Madeline Kreher, Leela Mundra, Maggie Watson, Maddy Cuono, Molly Morley and Christie Smesko finishing in 21:24. Hillsborough also won the varsity 4 in 23:15, beating second place Tampa Prep by 34 seconds.

All of the local crews are looking forward to the Halloween regatta, which will be held Oct. 27 at the Bypass Canal. Local power Plant High, which was absent from the Head of the Hillsborough, will be among the competitors, and Smith is looking forward to the challenge the Panthers will give his team.

'I'm looking for a little bit extra,' Smith said. 'It is another regatta to gear up for the Head of the Chattahoochee. It'll be a level up from the Head of the Hillsborough because it'll be all the teams that were there, plus Plant.'

The Head of the Chattahoochee is scheduled for Nov. 3-4 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Freedom Jumps Into Second With Win

Shaun Dickinson scored twice to lead Freedom to a 6-3 win against Wesley Chapel in the Hillsborough High School Hockey League. The win and a shootout loss by the Tigers allowed the Patriots to jump into second place.

Wesley Chapel opened the scoring on a goal by Kyle McPherson 2:05 into the game, but the Patriots came back to take a 4-1 lead after the first period, including a pair of power-play goals by Dickinson and Carey Coleman.

The Tigers appeared to be on their way to another win, but Riverview/Durant came back to win 2-1 in a shootout on goals by Cody O'Conner and Stephen Guerre.

A five-player shootout wasn't enough to separate Wharton and George Jenkins, as the two teams finished with a 3-3 tie. Both teams scored twice in the shootout, with Jared Bishop and Connor Castro scoring for Wharton and Kyle Farmer and Jason Jensen scoring for Jenkins.

The Wildcats had forced a shootout on a goal by Castro with 1.3 seconds to play after the Eagles had gone ahead 3-2 on Shane Reger's second goal of the game with 1:57 left. Jenkins had taken a 2-0 lead on goals by Reger and Jensen, but the Wildcats came back to tie the game on goals by Jake Nager and George Prieto.

Newsome Blue remained the only undefeated team in the league with a 9-1 win vs. Plant, as Will McKenna scored a hat trick for the Wolves. Plant took a lead 34 seconds into the game through Eric Siegman, and held the Wolves off for a period, entering the first intermission tied at 1. From there, however, the Wolves took over, as Kyle Reigler added a pair of goals and Johnny Maiello had a goal and three assists.

Bloomingdale continued its strong run with a 9-0 win vs. Newsome White as Jeremy White scored a hat trick.
