Mike Friedah discovered his hand position was wrong. The correction resulted in 22 consecutive strikes and his second lifetime 300.
Tommy Konrad was late arriving for practice shots. His first league attempt, a strike, went Brooklyn (1-2 pocket), but the next 11 were right in the 1-3 pocket for his first perfect game.
So it went last week in the Pin Chasers Veterans Breakaway Mixed League and Thunder and Lightning Mixed League, respectively.
'I had a good practice session,' said Friedah, 'but suddenly I couldn't release the ball right in the first game 184. I changed my hand position, with my index finger in and the pinky out, and shot 268 and the 300.'
Friedah finished the 268 with 10 straight strikes before pumping 12 strikes into the 1-3 pocket.
'I started that second game with the Greek Church (4-6-7-9-10) split. Then I picked up the 5-7 split in the second frame.'
He finished with a 752 series.
Konrad admits to being nervous only on the final ball, where he 'started shaking a little bit.'
After the opening perfecto, 'the lanes began to break down real bad and I just didn't carry.'
Konrad finished with games of 184 and 191 for a 675 series.
HALSTEAD TURNS 80: I began my 10-pin career in 1957, right after college graduation, and one of the first bowlers I befriended at the Tampa Bowling Center on Grace Street was TBC employee Bill Halstead.
Halstead was a tough man who didn't take any guff from anyone. He gained ABC fame by marathon bowling more than 1,200 games at Florida Lanes during the 1960s.
On Oct. 14, Halstead was surprised at Oakfield Lanes with a party celebrating his 80{+t}{+h} birthday, and he would like to thank everyone involved in his surprise.
OAKFIELD LANES: Victor Rowe's 297 game and Bobby Farr's 279-773 led the men last week, while Debbie Parham paced the women with 255-677.
Other good men's scores were J.C. Batista 289-741, Jim Sheed 276-703, Rowe 701, Lou Bartkowski 279, Farr 279, Tony Varano 279, Pat Fore 279, C.J.
