RIVERVIEW - Riverview High School will become a spooky place Saturday, when children will come in their Halloween finest to trick or treat in a safe and welcoming environment.
Called Trick or Treat Street, the annual event features Halloween-themed facades - including pirate ships, haunted houses and other creative scenes - built by dozens of area businesses. Children walk along the 'street' gathering candy and goodies. About 5,000 people are expected
There will be a costume contest for infants to 3-year-olds at 5 p.m.; ages 4 to 7 at 5:45 p.m.; ages 8 to 11 at 6:30 p.m.; and 12 and older at 7:15 p.m. The entry fee is $5 per child. Prizes will be awarded in each age group, said Kitty Cunningham, executive director of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event in partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Riverview High School.
Cunningham said Trick or Treat Street also features bounce houses and 10 high school clubs, whose members offer games and sell concessions to raise money for their organizations. Hot dogs, pizza and soda will be available.
Proceeds from the costume contest, parking and some of the food sales will benefit the Riverview chamber.
'We do this to offer parents a safe place to bring their children, where they can enjoy the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating,' Cunningham said.
