Outstanding Small Businesses Recognized

LITHIA - Five small businesses that focus on community service, business growth and other challenges were recognized Oct. 18 as Brandon's outstanding small businesses for 2007.

A large crowd gathered at The Palmetto Club in FishHawk Ranch for the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce gala. Winners in a variety of categories were selected based on the size of the business and number of employees.

•Kid's Community College took the award for minority-owned businesses. The enterprise is a nonprofit charter school based in Riverview and FishHawk Ranch.

Jeff Sheffer, owner of I.T. Computer Solutions in Brandon, received top billing in the category for businesses with one to five employees. Sheffer offers technical service and product sales to local businesses.

•Marie Gilmore, owner of the Osprey Observer in Valrico, received the award for companies with six to 15 employees. The Observer is a monthly publication distributed in four zones in east and southeast Hillsborough County.

•Jon and Lisa Yob, owners of Creative Recycling Systems in the Orient Park area, received the Small Business of the Year Award for businesses with more than 16 employees. The business recycles discarded electronic equipment and runs a computer donation program.

•For home-based businesses, Jack and Debbie Piascik, owners of Dream Limousine in Valrico, were called to the podium. The company offers limousine service for funerals, weddings, special events and special visits.

Along with the award, finalists received a gift basket filled with products and gift certificates.
