Tom And Huck Go Fishing

Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association will feature Mark Twain's classic 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,' a story about a boy growing up in a town along the banks of the Mississippi River.

This combination of adventure, humor and nostalgia will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday at the Center Place Children's Theater, 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon.

Tickets are $5 for members, $6 for children and adults ages 2 and older who are not members. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Check Out These Drum Lines

The Florida Bandmasters Association's District VII will host a marching band festival from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Bloomingdale High School's Charlie Harris Stadium, 1700 E. Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico.

. Twenty-three Hillsborough County high school marching bands and their auxiliary teams will compete for titles in performance, marching and maneuvering, percussion and other categories.

The bands will perform for a panel of six judges. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students. Call (813) 744-8018.

Pets Step Out, Seek Good Homes

Two events will be held Saturday to benefit our four-legged furry friends:

•Bring along your dog or cat to a fundraiser for PAWS of Hillsborough County at the Winthrop Town Centre at Providence Road and Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview.

Registration will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and the show starts at 11 a.m. The entry fee of $25 includes entry into all of the following dog competition categories: best wag, best kiss, best trick, best smile and the pet that looks most like its owner.

Winning dogs will get medals, and their owners will get trophies. Other prizes will include gift cards from sponsors.

For a $5 fee, cat owners can bring a dated photo of their felines for display and entry into a people's choice competition category. Proceeds will benefit Protect Animals With Sterilization, which rescues and finds homes for abandoned and abused pets. Call (813) 655-7297 or visit www.pawsofhc .org.

•The Florida State Fairgrounds will feature a Fall Pet Adoption Expo hosted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and No More Homeless Pets in Hillsborough County.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 20 animal rescue groups, along with Hillsborough County Animal Services and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, will be present with dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that need good homes.

Admission and parking are free. Donations will be accepted. Visitors are asked to use the fairgrounds entrance off Orient Road. Call (813) 920-8359 or go to www.tampa pets.org.

Community Arts And Crafts Show

The Brentwood Hills community in Valrico will host its first arts and crafts show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the soccer field, 1512 Brentwood Hills Blvd.

Many items will be available for sale, including decorations for the holidays.

Artists, crafters and designers are welcome to display their work.

The entry fee for vendors is $10. Display tables are not provided. Set-up time is 8 to 9 a.m. Entrance is free for shoppers and browsers.

Food will be available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit improvements for the children's playground at Brentwood Hills. Call Lisa at (813) 571-3925 for information.

Sunday

Meet 'Nutcracker's' Sugar Plum Fairy

Brandon Ballet will present its second annual Sugar Plum Fairy Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the River Hills County Club, 3943 New River Hills Parkway, Valrico.

The event will feature the Sugar Plum Fairy and company dancers who will perform in Brandon Ballet's 'The Nutcracker.'

The Nutcracker, the Rat King and other characters will pose for photos and sign autographs.

Food and beverages will be served. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for ages 17 and younger. Tickets are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday; 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday at Brandon Ballet, 161 E. Bloomingdale Ave., Brandon.

Open Mic Night At Music Showcase

Want to sing, strum or drum with the big leagues?

Friday Night Open Mic at Music Showcase gives intermediate and advanced music students a chance to perform with a band from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. the first and third Friday monthly.

Anyone interested in performing should call to get a pre-selected song list and submit their name.

Cost is $5 in advance or $6 at the door. The Music Showcase is at 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon. Call Wendi Pruitt at (813) 685-5998.
