Childress Pulls Off His 4th Perfecto

Published: October 31, 2007

Back in the 1970s, Barry Childress spent part of his United States Air Force career at MacDill Air Force Base.

His MacDill tour didn't include anything to brag about bowling-wise, at least where perfection was concerned.

Then came a move to Tacoma, Wash. In 1986, he connected with his first 300 at McCord AFB. In 1989, out of the service but still residing in Tacoma, Childress bowled another 300. And in 1991, he did it again in the Evergreen State.
Childress and family moved to the Cigar City barely two months ago, and it only took Childress that long to adjust to the conditions at the Pin Chasers Veterans Keglers Mens League and roll his fourth 300.

Childress, a southpaw, exploded for games of 300, 279 and 204 for a 783 series, and he credits his teammates for calming him down in the 10th frame.

'I was a little edgy in that 10th frame,' Childress said, 'so I tried to talk to the guys on my team.'

Only one strike was doubtful. Childress pulled the ball in the seventh frame, only to have it cross over to the righthander's 1-3 pocket and carry. The rest of the strikes were perfect in the 1-2 pocket.

AMF UNIVERSITY: In what is believed to be a house record, Anthony Carinci, in the University of South Florida Club League, bowled an 856 series on games of 268, 289 and 299.

Two other bowlers - Stephen Best and Casey Wood - came close to perfection last week.

Best rolled 298 while Wood fired 297.

Don Helsel led the men in series with 269-758, while Wood had 742, Darin Hays 259-691, Jeffrey Erikson 253-650, Tom Wang 264-646 and John Dickerman 264-627.

Natalie Groves was the female leader with 223-596. Other scores for the women were Casie Soderstrom 220-555, Sarah Macander 201 and Selena Santena 538.

OAKFIELD LANES: Randy Allen's 296 game and Steve Williams' 268-710 led the men last week, while Barbara Martin was the women's leader with 247-653.

Other good scores for the men were John Miller 279, Joe Brannon 278, Chris Keyes 277, Ed Diabo 276, Jeff English 269, Reggie Mitchell Jr. 269, Mike DeVore 268, TC Hilderbrand 267 and Patrick Buddenrock 266. Allison Burke followed Martin for the women with a 244 game.

FLORIDA LANES: Richard Wilt was the big story last week, coming within two pins of perfection en route to a 788 series.

Other good scores for the men were Darren Walker 268-733, David Acree 268-722, Tim Vizzari 702, Michael Vina 654, Kenny Mascarina 646, Chris Saturno 265 and Dan Villanueva 256.

Amy Sallot led the women with 237-683 while Lisa Morris had 560, Marilou Candilario 223-557, Pat Moble 211, Terry Broyles 202 and Annie Leavines 201-521.

PIN POINTS: Eric Oglesby's 289 and Rick Olson's 715 topped the Pinarama Lanes Base Exchange League for the men, while Diane Tolzman's 202 and Kathleen Toler's 551 led the women. Also for the men, Bill Helsel Sr. went 256-705, Oglesby 690, Alan Mai 265-659, Josh Aulet 643, Rod Archield 639, Olson 246 and Rick Amerson 245. Pam Stewart rolled 193-528 while Betty Lewis had 510 and Steph Micco 500. In that same league, Carl Anderson, 83, picked up the 4-7-9-10 split.
