Pin, Tuck and Sew

Feel like learning about new ways to use a needle and thread in a social setting? The Brandon/East Bay chapter of the American Sewing Guild is always happy to see new faces.

Today, expert seamstress Judy Herbert of the Tampa Bay Sewing Center will talk about her recent trip to Hong Kong and sewing with silk fabrics. Chapter members will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Brandon Recreation Center, 502 E. Sadie St., Brandon.

Outlaws On The Run

This week's movie offering at the Winthrop Town Center will be the classic western adventure 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.'

The film will begin at 9 p.m. on the east wall of Publix supermarket at Providence Road and Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview. The film is part of a free summer movie series offered Friday nights for the whole family.

'Sundance' stars Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy, Robert Redford as The Sundance Kid and Katherine Ross as schoolteacher Etta Place. The movie is about outlaws who become notorious across the wild west as expert bank robbers.

Open Mic Night
So you think you can sing, strum or drum with the big leagues?

Friday Night Open Mic at Music Showcase will give intermediate and advanced music students a chance to perform with a live band. The series starts Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and continues the first and third Friday monthly. Anyone interested in performing should call to get a pre-selected song list and put their name on the list of performers.

Cost is $5 in advance or $6 at the door. The Music Showcase is at 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon. Call Wendi Pruitt at (813) 685-5998.

Adopt A Greyhound

If you have room in your home and your heart to give a retired racing greyhound a new home, this event is for you.

Greyhound Rescue and Adoptions of Tampa Bay will host a meet-and-greet with greyhounds available for adoption from noon-3 p.m. Saturday at Petco, 2434 Brandon Blvd., Brandon.

Lush, Wild And Cheap

See for yourself why the Lowry Park Zoo at 1101 W. Sligh Ave. in Tampa was voted the No. 1 'Family Friendly Zoo' in the United States by Child Magazine from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for just $3.

Observe more than 2,000 animals in lush natural exhibits and learn about endangered wildlife. For information, call (813) 935-8552.

Smokey Mountain Tale

Popular local playwright Terry Abbott presents the latest in his series of musical productions with The Village Players' production of 'Moonshine: A Smokey Mountain Tale' at the historic Valrico Civic Center through September.

Set during the 1880s, the plot follows two feuding clans of moonshiners. The mood is set with lots of American folk music featuring banjos, mandolin, guitar and fiddle, selections such as 'John Henry,' 'Wayfaring Stranger,' 'Old Dan Tucker' and 'Red River Valley.'

Proceeds will benefit the preservation and restoration of the civic center. Showtimes are 8:15 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sept. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29. Tickets are $12. Call (813) 689-0044.
