RIVERVIEW - Hundreds of canoeists and kayakers are expected to plunge into the Alafia River on Nov. 17 for the eighth annual Alafia Canoe and Kayak Challenge.
Because of the popularity of the event, organizers are recommending that would-be participants register early. The number of participants will be limited.
Last year's event drew 330 boats that were paddled from Lithia Springs Park in Lithia to the Riverview Civic Center. This year, only 300 boats will be allowed to register.
'We have to limit the number of participants because of the impact on the river,' said Karen Wagner, challenge organizer and president of the Alafia River Basin Stewardship Council.
'This year, the race has gone nationwide, so it's even more important for people to register early,' Wagner said. The race is officially recognized by the U.S. Canoe Association, which sets guidelines for race categories and boat sizes.
And although there are some 'elite,' or racing, categories, most of the participants typically are recreational boaters who compete for fun.
Although the U.S. Canoe Association brings professionalism to the event, it's still just a fun challenge, said Carl Vogel, a regional delegate for the association.
'Karen's race is one I've tried to figure out, how she draws over 300 boats a year,' said Vogel, who has participated in the challenge for six of the past seven events.
'Challenge means people are going out just to have fun and watch the elite racers blast past them. People rent a canoe or bring their kayak from home,' Vogel said. The racers are seasoned 'professional amateurs' there for the competition, he said. They will race against anybody.
For many participating in the Alafia Challenge, the challenge is finishing, he said. 'It's all about holding an event so people can have a good time.'
There will be 15 race categories this year, ranging in registration price between $25 and $50 for single elite canoes, recreational canoes and kayaks, Wagner said. Categories are available for competitive and recreational paddlers.
The registration fee nets each entrant a T-shirt, a paddler's gift bag, refreshments, launching, transportation back to the start point and post-race activities.
Participants are treated to a picnic with live music when the race is over. This year, the band will be N-Kahootz. Awards and trophies will be distributed in each category.
Proceeds from the Challenge will benefit an environmental project along the river and an educational scholarship.
Wagner said volunteers are needed for race day. For information, contact her at (813) 684-7300. To register, go online to www.alafia challenge.com or www .active.com.
The event is co-sponsored by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department and numerous private businesses, schools and other organizations.
