Brandon High Graduate's Movie Showing at Channelside

TAMPA - A screening of the award-winning Independent Film Festival Best Feature movie 'Last Stop for Paul,' rated PG-13, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Channelside IMAX Cinemas, 601 Channelside Drive. Admission is $7.50 per person.

Attending the showing will be Tampa native and Brandon High School graduate Heather Petrone, who plays Amy, the love interest, in the movie. Petrone is the daughter of Mike and Charlotte Sunderland of Apollo Beach.

Neil Mandt wrote, directed and starred in the film. Other actors include Marc Carter, Ron Carlson, Greg Poppen and Eric Wing. The story's main characters, co-workers Charlie (Mandt) and Cliff (Carter), journey around the globe to spread the ashes of Cliff's friend, Paul, who never got to take the trip he wanted to in life.

'The rest of the parts were played by real people from the countries where it was filmed,' said Petrone's mother. 'If Neil, Marc and Amy aren't in the scene, they're filming it. It's a hilarious movie! It's very clever, and is based on true travel stories. And don't miss the outtakes at the end.'

Rotary Club Ends Year With Strong Record

BRANDON - The Brandon '86 Rotary Club installed new officers and celebrated a year of community giving totaling $66,000 at a banquet June 28 at the Palmetto Club at Fishhawk Ranch.

Ruben Alfaras, outgoing District 6890 governor, inducted Larry Westberry, president; Mike Wick, president-elect; Becky Jordan, vice president; Ed Johns, treasurer; and Mike Meegan, secretary.

The new directors include Earl Haugabook, Billie Smith, Randy Kizer, Mitch Burley, Ryan Odiorne, Carol Dolphin, Tom Linsky, Reggie Osenton, Bob Boettger and Jake Piascik.

The outgoing president, Latour 'L.T.' Lafferty, awarded the Rotarian of the Year Award to Becky Jordan and thanked 'all the Rotarians for leading the way through service to their community for the past year.'

Spanish Grant Writing Workshop Offered

TAMPA - A free grant writing workshop called 'Seminario sobre la recaudación fondos' will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at the John F. Germany Public Library, 900 N. Ashley Drive. This workshop, for nonprofit organizations, will cover the basic principles and techniques of writing grant proposals in Spanish. It will also provide networking opportunities for the organizations' Spanish-speaking representatives.

Chai Group Hosts Membership Tea

VALRICO - The Brandon Chai group of Hadassah will host its fourth annual Membership Tea called, Start the New Year Light, at 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Savannah Landings Clubhouse on Springvale Road.

'Light refreshments will be served, free of charge,' said Janice Perelman, co-president of the Brandon group.

Current members of the group are welcome, as are any women 'interested in learning more about Hadassah, the largest international, nonprofit women's group in the world,' Perelman said. 'What a nice way to start the new year!'

Women's Guild Installs Officers, Will Serve Tea

BRANDON - The Women's Guild of Nativity Catholic Church, 705 E. Brandon Blvd., invites women of the parish to a free tea party at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the social hall. Judy Hill, former Tampa Tribune columnist, will be the guest speaker and best-hat-contest judge.

'It will be fun, plenty of food, door prizes, and a chance to meet old friends and new,' said Jeth Perry, guild publicity chairperson. 'The ladies can even dress up if they want to.

'All the women who attend Nativity Church, those who are in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults program ... and anyone that would like to join the Women's Guild is welcome, too,' Perry said. 'This is part of our Guild Fest to invite more ladies to come and see what the guild is all about.'

At a ceremony in the chapel Aug. 13, the guild installed a new board of officers for the 2007-08 year: Virginia Baum, president; Cindy Raymond, first vice president; Patty Hamilton, second vice president; Joan Storms, recording secretary; and Arlene Schultz, corresponding secretary.

The Rev. Arthur Proulx, pastor of the church, was the guest speaker. A reception was held in the social hall after the installation.
