In the many years he has been a member, he 'has volunteered in many capacities to help this lodge move forward,' said Larry Henbest, exalted ruler, 'cooking, power washing and doing electrical work - you won't always see him doing the job, but we enjoy the fruits of his quiet labor.'
Henbest accepted an award from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for the lodge's Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs, drug-awareness program.
The Ladies of Elks selected Gerri Mann as their Lady of Distinction for August, calling her a humble, hard-working member of the organization.
Brandon Newcomers Planning Fun Events
BRANDON - Lewis Piche presented a Crime Prevention program at the Brandon Newcomers Club meeting Sept. 19 at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association in Brandon. The club, which has about 125 members, meets at 9:30 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month from September through May at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association, 619 Vonderburg Drive.
'We're not just for newcomers,' said Joanna Anderson, publicity chairwoman and past president. 'We're for newly retired or those with time on their hands.' The club serves the community, gives established residents opportunities to share their knowledge of the area and helps newcomers meet their neighbors. In the process they all have a lot of fun, Anderson said.
Some of the club's activities and functions are the book club, chaired by Betty Cocchiola; Brandon Newcomers Bowling League, chaired by Alma Ace; Let's Eat Out, co-chaired by Hilda Hiner and Marta Monk; three Bunco groups (day and evening), chaired by Eunice Lusk, Ruth Craft and Marjorie Jirovec; Gal's Night Out, co-chaired by Jeanne Archambault and Helen Lepre; Opinionated Ladies, by Mary Ann Hartman; crafts, by Vilma Hartley; fun and games, co-chaired by Anna Hensley and Doris Blake; and gardening, chaired by Marcia Hunter and her assistant Kathleen Mathis-Spight.
'We take part in the Halloween Horribles Parade at Center Place,' Anderson said, 'and our big fundraiser - our Make It, Bake It, Sew It, Grow It - is in November. It's all things that we've made and auction off.'
The club is being led this year by President Re Dangremond. Other officers who were installed June 20 at Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club are Miriam Smith, vice president; Esther Varon, treasurer; Pat Fuller-Gardner, secretary; and Jessie Stanford, member-at-large.
