PLANT CITY - If you live in eastern Hillsborough County and want to develop skills as a firefighter, now is the time to volunteer.
The Dover-Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department is seeking applications for volunteers that will be processed by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue to fill 20 open positions.
'All applicants will be given thorough background checks, complete medical physicals and, if found to be fit, 160 hours of firefighter training,' Lt. Taira Franklin said. 'The county will provide all checks and training. If someone wants to find a way to make a difference in someone's life they need to call us.'
Fire Capt. Bill Mulvaney said county officials are looking to expand the number of volunteer firefighters at the station to cover a growing area.
Franklin said qualified volunteers will receive uniforms, firefighting gear and free training.
'And until a new schedule comes around all volunteers will be working nights,' she said.
The night shift primarily works the infrequent fire call and an occasional traffic crash.
The station, 3138 Sydney Dover Road, has a full eat-in kitchen, a big-screen television, cable and a weight machine.
Any volunteers interested in working at the station should call (813) 659-0903.
