Jordan Dorsey Becomes Eagle Scout

Boy Scout Troop 11 honored Jordan B. Dorsey, 17, at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor recently. Jordan is the son of Kevin and Teresa Dorsey of Valrico.

Only two percent of scouts attain this, the highest rank for any scout in Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle Scout must have completed 21 merit badges and organized a service project for his church, community or school.

Dorsey led a crew of scouts that built four bat houses – four feet high by two feet wide by six inches deep – that they then mounted on old wood telephone poles to a height of 14 feet above the ground.
The bat houses were placed inside the Medard Reservoir County Park in Turkey Creek.

Bats eat roughly their own weight in insects every night. The Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department is excited to have these houses and hope that by eating mosquitoes and other insects, the bats will create a more comfortable environment for citizens using the park.

Dorsey joined Troop 11 when he was 13 years old. He served in several leadership positions in the troop and earned 26 merit badges. He attended numerous camping trips and summer camps and participated in a two-week High Adventure mountain trek in Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

Dorsey, a senior at Durant High School, has been active in Durant's Class Act Show Chorus group, cross country track and spent two years in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. He is passionate about body building and fitness.

Dorsey is also an active member at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Brandon. His future plans include attending college to pursue a career in sports medicine or physical therapy.
