TAMPA - County commissioners unanimously voted today to give $2.5 million to community leaders planning the Brandon Community Advantage Center, a proposed civic and cultural hub to be built in the Winthrop residential and commercial development in Riverview.
Commissioners agreed to allocate the cash from the Community Investment Tax fund, which voters approved in 1996.
The vote ratified tentative approval commissioners granted in June. They voted without comment on the center.
Commissioners also designated other projects as recipients of some of the $40 million that became available when commissioners decided not to proceed with Championship Park, a multipurpose athletic complex that was to be built outside Plant City.
Former state Sen. Tom Lee and state Rep. Trey Traviesa, R-Tampa, have secured $3.4 million in state and federal funds for the center. Of that, $1.4 million is federal funding offered in exchange for making part of the center an emergency evacuation shelter for people with special needs.
The center is to be built on four acres off Watson road at the southeast corner of the Winthrop development, east of Providence Road and south of Bloomingdale Avenue.
