RIVERVIEW - While many couples across the country went out of their way to schedule their weddings for Aug. 8 as a way of securing good luck, a South Shore couple took the theme in a slightly different direction.
Carmine and Joanna Caporaso planned for their second son, Ryan, to be born on Aug. 8 at Brandon Regional Hospital.
However, the Caporasos ended up taking the 8-8-08 gimmick to the extreme — the infant was born precisely at 8:08 a.m.
"We had selected that date a while ago and my surgery was scheduled for 7:30 a.m.," Joanna said. "Once we were in there, and we saw that it was getting to be close to 8:08 a.m., I told them, 'If we can make it happen, let's try to make it happen.'"
The couple selected Aug. 8 as the date of birth for Ryan as a way to honor Carmine's father, Philip, who now shares a birthday with his grandson.
Dr. Stephen Zweibach delivered the baby boy, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, via cesarean section.
"To be able to deliver a baby on the first day of the Olympics is a memorable moment for me," Zweibach said in a hospital press release. "I was honored to be able to see Ryan born on a day that is special to his family."
Zweibach also delivered the couple's other son, Christopher, four years ago.
"That date just worked out in a really good way," Joanna said. "We did it to honor my father-in-law, but the whole thing with the Olympics and 8-8-08 being a lucky day for a lot of people just added to it."
