With a possible Category 1 hurricane trekking toward the Tampa Bay area, this is the time to get plans in place for Fido's safety, officials say.
A disaster drill to practice pet sheltering and sign-in procedures takes place from 10 a.m. to noon today at Burnett Middle School, 1010 N. Kingsway, Seffner.
The event is sponsored by Hillsborough County Animal Services and the Community of Hillsborough Animal & Agricultural Response Team.
Burnett is one of two approved pet-friendly evacuation shelters in Hillsborough County. The other is Sickles High School in Tampa.
Included in today's training: Volunteer training on helping out with the pets and steps you can take in advance to prepare for your animal's safety, such as micro-chipping for identification and having a sturdy carrier. Organizers also recommend having a minimum three-day supply of food, water, medicine and waste removal for each animal.
A pet evacuation kit will also be on display.
Animals should not be brought to the drill.
