Perfecto Follows 'Awful Opener'

Published: February 6, 2008

When Jacob Cardinal arose from his seat in the bowler's circle in the Oakfield Lanes Chaos Incorporation League and neared the approach for his 10th frame, he was shaking so hard he just knew he wasn't going to pull it off.

Nine straight strikes illuminating the scoreboard proved the 17-year-old home-schooled junior was three-quarters of the way to his first lifetime perfect game, a fact his surrounding bowling friends were quietly assuring him was no reason for panic.

"They, my friends, kept telling me not to worry, just to keep bowling," Cardinal said. "I thought I would pull the ball in the 10th frame, but all three strikes were right in the 1-3 pocket."

The 12th and decisive strike created chaos, as teammates and other friends jumped on the lanes and joyfully tackled Cardinal.

The 300 came after an "awful opener." Cardinal then moved a little to the left on the approach and played the same line and the strikes began to fall.

"I had a few shakers in that second game," Cardinal added, "but I was able to hit the 1-3 pocket pretty well."
