U.S. 92 Resurfacing Set To Begin

SEFFNER - Motorists will have to swap a couple of years of inconvenience for a smoother ride on U.S. 92.

Beginning in April, the Florida Department of Transportation will spend $28.2 million resurfacing U.S. 92 between Eureka Springs Road and Thonotosassa Road.

Contractor Ajax Paving Industries will begin at Eureka Springs, and crews will work eastward, said Kris Carson, FDOT spokeswoman.

"Once this project is finished, the community can expect a much smoother ride, improved drainage and increased safety features," she said.

Plans also call for revamping the intersection at County Road 579, and a 4-foot paved shoulder will be built on both sides of U.S. 92.

The state also is building sidewalks or boardwalks along the 12.5 mile-stretch of U.S. 92 targeted for resurfacing.

Crews also will regrade drainage ditches along the side of the highway, replace traffic signals and upgrade signals at Peach and Pine streets. One of the upgrades will include a countdown feature, so pedestrians will know how soon the light will change.

Terry Flott, president of the Seffner Community Alliance, said residents are thankful but not excited.

"It is always welcome to have your roads upgraded, but it is nothing earth-shattering," she said. "The sidewalks are long overdue."

Carson said the sidewalks will alternate on either side of U.S. 92 and be on the same side of the street as Armwood High School, Burnett Middle School and Seffner Christian Academy.
Construction crews will work night and day, Carson said, but lanes will not be closed between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. and 2 and 7:30 p.m.

The state awarded the contract for the work in June. Carson said construction was delayed to allow utility companies to relocate their lines.
