Extreme Gamers Go For Bragging Rights

Teens ages 13 to 18 who excel in the interactive video games Guitar Hero III or Dance Dance Revolution are invited to participate in a free Game Zone Teen Tournament organized by the Hillsborough County public libraries. The top two players from each round will win a prize and compete in the grand tournament.

The qualifying event will be at 1 p.m. at the Brandon Regional Library, 619 Vonderburg Drive. The grand tournament will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 1, at the Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa.

Rummaging Around For Good Loot

Are you a sucker for a good yard sale? The Riverview Garden Club will host its annual plant and rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Riverview Civic Center, 11020 Park Drive, Riverview.

Many plants and seedlings to be sold were donated by area nurseries. Baked goods, household items, clothes, books, jewelry and more will be for sale as well.

Proceeds will pay for $1,000 scholarships for area students seeking degrees in gardening and horticulture. Call Marlene Kirst at (813) 653-1459.

Got A Song In Your Heart?

The Music Showcase will host a songwriters contest for all ages and experience levels at 10 a.m. at the Music Showcase, 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon.

Participants must be prepared to play their original compositions. No full bands are allowed. The compositions will be judged, and prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue

If you love African violets, this show is for you. The Tampa African Violet Society will host its 32nd annual African Violet Society of America Judged Show and Sale Feb. 23 and 24 at the Farm Bureau, 100 S. Mulrennan Road, Valrico.

The event will feature a variety of plants and plant supplies for purchase. Hours Feb. 23 are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for sales, with the show from noon to 5 p.m. Hours Feb. 24 are from noon to 5 p.m. for the show and sale.

The State Fair Is Up And Running

Elvis impersonators, sequin-clad showgirls and choreographed musical performances bring a taste of Las Vegas to this year's Florida State Fair. The fair events include a Las Vegas Revue and the national Elvis impersonator competition finals, in addition to traditional food, rides other attractions for the whole family.

Hours are 9 a.m. daily through Monday. Closing times vary depending on the day of the week.

Visitors can enjoy an abundance of events, including fireworks, professional wrestling demonstrations, a roller derby championship and the Country Gold Tour 2008, featuring many popular country singers. There also will be food vendors, games and prizes.
