Brandon Kiwanis Holds Membership Drive

BRANDON - The Greater Brandon Kiwanis Club invites anyone interested in learning about the club to a breakfast meeting from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday at Golden Corral, 815 Providence Road. Several members will talk about their involvement in the club and its causes. Rita Peters, head of the sex crimes and child abuse division of the Florida state attorney's office, will be the guest speaker.

A person's "first visit only with us is a free breakfast," said membership chairwoman Gena Schaffer.

Guests are asked to make a reservation before attending the quarterly membership drives.

The Brandon Kiwanis Club offers community programs through a back-to-school health fair; a Christmas party for Mango Head Start; presentations of books to children in need; food and clothing collections; support of Joshua House in Tampa, UNICEF and the Salvation Army; and the Terrific Kids program in 24 schools.

"You are needed!" Schaffer said. "Please accept our invitation."

Gifted Student, Teacher Win Awards

BRANDON - When Sonya Pearson of Brandon received a cooking lesson as a Christmas gift from her husband, Rambo, and her daughter, Laura Garren, little did she know it would help her win first place in the Brandon Elks Lodge No. 2383's chili cook-off Jan. 26.

A recipe she learned during her lesson from Rene Marquis, captain of the Army Culinary Team and personal aide for a MacDill Air Force Base officer, earned her the blue ribbon.

Other winning chefs in the cook-off, organized by Steve Sawdey and Kim Martinez, were Steve Powell, who won highest honors in the medium category, and Bernie Hiskey, who earned top place in the mild category.

Marquis, whose wife, Laura, works for Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Brandon, also is an award-winning chef. He garnered the Lt. Gen. John D. McLaughlin Award in July at the 2007 American Culinary Federation National Convention in Orlando. He was one of 79 award recipients selected out of more than 2,000 chefs and food service personnel who attended the convention.
