Sport bowling is tough.
Just ask any of the intrepid souls who pounded the boards week after week last summer at Pin Chasers Midtown.
Lane conditions that change week to week make it extremely difficult to average more than 200 during an entire season.
Such was and has been the case for a young Palm Harbor woman during the last three bowling seasons.
Ashly Galante, 19, a freshman at Pikeville College in Kentucky and a first-year member of Team USA, became the first person to win three Sport Bowling national average awards by averaging 206 for 90 games in the Scott Russell Gold Sport League at Countryside Lanes in Clearwater.
Galante also won the award in 2004-05 with a 194.05 average and 2005-06 with 200.71.
Another Team USA member, Derek Eoff, of Greenfield, Wis., captured the men's Sport Bowling high-average honor with a 222.38 average for 63 games at Alpine Lanes in Muskego, Wis.
ANOTHER BIG SCORE: Just one week after a four-man team in the Pin Chasers Midtown Pepsi 8/40 League rolled 3,019 (251 per man average), another team in the same league exploded with 2,919, a 243 per man average.
Chad Gaddie led Team No. 15 with 236-290-278 - 804 while Tom Ream went 225-268-222 - 715, Rod Ortiz 246-242-214 - 702 and Wayne Swift 247-227-224 - 698.
OOPS, WE ERRED: We were mistaken in last week's column when we stated the Tampa team of Pat Trudeau, John Pendino, Gregg Meany and Danny Cobb held the state record for a four-man team with 3,039, bowled in 1992.
The USBC has verified that the Deez Nuts team from Sunrise rolled 3,189 in 2000. They are now followed by a 3,090 in Davie in 1992, a 3,089 in Miami Lakes in 1997, a 3,074 in South Pasadena in 2000 and Tampa's 3,039. The 3,189 is a national record.
AMF UNIVERSITY: B.C. Frye and Jodi Moores led the men and women last week.
Frey rolled 278-705 and was followed by Roger Baker with 255-686, Billy Herren 269-668, Dave Fitzwater 235-664 and Andrew Anglin 259-612.
Moores went 234-623 while Sarah Macander had 203-550, Terry Mongelli 193-515, Jean Frye 181-504 and Lorraine Agusti 179-475.
FLORIDA LANES: Cliff Welton's 265-738 took top honors for the men while Rhonda Eyring had 190-559 to lead the women last week.
Other good scores for the men were Greg Salmon 638, Gary Mallet 237, Bob Laxen 223-569 and Shawn Gagne 235-535. Other women scores were Inga Neste 165, Lorraine Brewer 475, Muriel Haviland 157 and Pat Fojaco 420.
PIN POINTS: Parker Bohn III, a 30-time PBA champion, Brian Voss, a 24-time PBA winner, Leanne Barrette Hulsenberg, a 26-time PWBA titlist, and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, a 20-time PWBA champion, have been elected to the USBC Hall of Fame.
