SEFFNER - Never look a gift horse in the mouth - especially when safe passage for pedestrians is at stake.
County commissioners didn't Jan. 3 when they accepted a $211,400 state grant to build a sidewalk along Clay Pit Road.
"The community requested it, and funding became available," said Tom Fass, a project manager supervisor for the Hillsborough County Department of Public Works.
Fass said county crews will construct a sidewalk on the north side of Clay Pit from County Road 579 west to Lakewood Drive. He said work should begin in late March and be finished by the end of May.
The Florida Department of Transportation gave county officials the go-ahead to proceed with the project in October, but paperwork and accounting caused delays.
Commissioners approved the project unanimously without comment.
The state grant money went into the county's Sidewalk Retrofit program for the current fiscal year, bringing that fund's total to $2.3 million. Fass said the county didn't have to put up any matching funds.
The county had no money set aside for the project.
