Although he admits to being a bit nervous, Mike Schmidt probably had things pretty well figured out as he performed a first among Tampa Bay bowlers.
Schmidt, 17, rolled a perfect game during youth league play at Pin Chasers Midtown, but by accomplishing the feat on a PBA sport shot, he became the first Tampa bowler ever to bowl 300 on that difficult oil condition in league play.
Tampa records reveal a perfect game has been recorded on a sport condition, but in a Junior Gold tournament.
Schmidt went 232-300-222 - 754.
"I started the 300 with a Brooklyn strike," said Schmidt, who used a 15-pound Hammer Black Widow Pearl. "I just pulled it. But, the next 11 strikes were right in the 1-3 pocket."
Schmidt recently graduated from Bloomingdale High and will attend Hillsborough Community College in the fall. Then, it's on to the University of South Florida.
And what will this record-setter major in that will probably assist him in "figuring out" more perfect games?
Accounting, of course.
