About 100,000 people shirked the sweltering heat Thursday to take part in one of Brandon's favorite annual traditions, the Fourth of July Parade. The 90 entries included Scout troops, politicians, veterans' and military groups and dancers of many genres.
Church groups loaded onto floats and sang to the crowds. Motorcycle riders revved their engines. Clowns from the Shriners delighted children. Paradegoers, many dressed in the colors of Old Glory or waving American flags, arrived early with water, snacks, umbrellas and tents to block the sun. Some doused each other and parade marchers by squirting giant soaker guns.
This year marked the event's golden anniversary, 50 years after the first parade in 1958.
