BRANDON - Hillsborough County commissioners unanimously voted today to designate the Knowles House, a 1915 old-Florida home at 808 Knowles Road, a county landmark.
Commissioners voted without comment. The status makes owner Barbara Gaylor eligible for property tax breaks for any historically appropriate improvements for the next decade.
The two-story square house of Bell Shoals Road was built by Robert Henry Knowles around 1915 out of local materials, including heart pine. His father, Henry Marion Knowles, bought 80 acres, including the home site, in 1902. The family migrated from Alabama by wagon train in 1872.
The house is an example of the symmetrical frame vernacular style. It has clapboard siding and is topped by a pyramidal hipped roof. A wrap-around porch was added in 1920.
