Steve Williams says he wasn't nervous.
To be sure, he certainly wasn't as nervous as the bowler two lanes to the right of him.
And Darin Hays was positive lifetime perfect game No. 42 was in the bag until an unfamiliar occurrence reared its ugly 7-pin head.
Williams and Hays, along with Ref Ramhoff and Penny Schultz from Brandon Crossroads Lanes, shined brightest among Tampa bowlers last week.
Williams went 242-300-195-737 in the Oakfield Lanes Tuesday Nite Dreamers League, but it was his 11{+t}{+h} consecutive strike during his third lifetime 300 that created the biggest stir.
"Everyone had stopped bowling around me," said Williams, "but that didn't make me nervous. However, as I was in the final steps of the 11{+t}{+h} delivery, I happened to see a bowler out of the corner of my eye two lanes to the right going down his lane at the same time. He must have noticed me, because he suddenly pulled up at the foul line and somehow held onto the ball. When I delivered my ball, I pulled it terribly. The ball, however, went Brooklyn 1-2 for a right-hander and all 10 pins went into the pit.
"The 12{+t}{+h} strike was right in the 1-3 pocket."
Hays rolled 268-299-200-772 in the opening week of Frye's Pro Shop Summer League at AMF University Bowl.
Although the smooth-throwing lefty has 41 perfect games, it was only his second lifetime 299. Of course, as in the case for most southpaws, the seven pin refused to fall on the final attempt.
Ramhoff bowled 300 in the BCB Classic Trio League, while Schultz had 299 in the BCB TGIF Mixed League.
OAKFIELD LANES: Harry Pope was the leader for the men in series last week with a 289-748.
Right behind Pope were William Saunders 246-709, Eddie Kelsey 268-699, Victor Rowe 278-687, Jim Bragg 267-642 and Mike Dekker 276-633.
Melody Williams led the women with 223-604, followed by Michelle Scott 234-592, Gail Baxley 221-563, Allison Burke 225 and Sue Maciejewski 220-531.
AMF UNIVERSITY BOWL: Brian O'Connell's 234-673 edged out Jay Vogt's 258-671 for male honors, while Christine Mooney's 201 and Tina Tressler's 532 led the women last week.
Other good scores for the men were Tom Raad 246-670, David Beronda 245-668, T K McCain 224-631, Andrew Anglian 265-616, Chris Hickman 220-615 and Barron Clem 237. Ellen Ellis rolled 494 and Janice Newton 490 for the women.
PIN POINTS: Tampa's Michele Dawson is currently in fifth place with 605 in singles (150-169 average) in the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championship in Canton, Mich. ... Winners in the Greater Area Afterschool Championship at Brandon Crossroads Bowl were Kaleb Boje, Kollin Boje and Kevin Nance from St. Stephens Catholic Church in grades kindergarten through third, and Tyler Watkins, Sergio Aceves, AJ McCombs and Curtis Veneable from Burnett Middle School in grades 4 through 8. ... My apologies to Pin Chasers Midtown manager Robby Martin, who was identified in last week's column as Robbie.
