TAMPA - The Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Eastern Airlines Silverliners International elected new officers for the 2008-09 year in May. The new president is Adrienne Love, Barbara Bukata is vice president, Barbara Reed is secretary and Trish Schwartzkopf is treasurer.
The chapter, which includes many members from the Brandon area, "has been around for a number of years. Many of the women have served in several capacities over the years," Reed said. "We do work well together, and I say that because we put on a highly successful convention in St. Pete in April."
Reed was installed as secretary of the international organization at the St. Petersburg convention April 9-13.
"You know how it goes - you step out of the room for a minute, and someone elects you to an office!" Reed joked when asked about her new position.
Reed worked as a flight attendant for Eastern in 1956 and 1957.
"At that time, when flight attendants married, they had to resign or take a ground job," she said. "I found it to be a very fascinating job. We provided service from the time a passenger boarded the plane until he/she disembarked. ... It was considered a glamorous job, something to which to aspire."
At the convention, Mike Smiles, chief development officer for Paul Newman's Hole in The Wall Gang Camp, presented a lifetime giving award to Lois Morton, Eastern Airlines Silverliners' Foundation chairwoman and camp coordinator. The Connecticut camp, which serves children with life-threatening illnesses, is celebrating its silver anniversary this year.
The award recognized the Silverliners' significant contributions to the camp, more than $100,000. A cabin at the camp is named in honor of the organization.
The next Florida Gulf Coast Chapter meeting will be at 1 p.m. June 28 at Lee Roy Selmon's, 4302 Boy Scout Blvd. W., Tampa.
Former flight attendants for the now defunct Eastern Airlines may join by calling Love at (813) 677-2909 or Janice Henry at (813) 837-4312.
