APOLLO BEACH - Newland Communities Inc. won county approval last week to add 162 acres and 918 homes to its Waterset community that will be built on land between Big Bend Road in Apollo Beach and 19th Avenue in Ruskin.
The project has already been approved for 5,000 homes.
With the addition of the acreage, formerly known as the Elsberry Development of Regional Impact, Newland now becomes responsible for construction of a major roadway through the development that will be an extension of Apollo Beach Boulevard and includes an overpass over Interstate 75.
Newland is also seeking to change some of the lot sizes within Waterset. The smaller lots would be for less expensive homes that would be appeal to singles and smaller families and be more affordable to people such as teachers, police officers and others who might otherwise be priced out of home-ownership opportunities within the development.
The request for smaller lot sizes will go before the county commission at its meeting June 10 at 1:30 p.m. at County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.
