Plenty To Do At Centers

The Hillsborough County Department of Aging Services offers seniors leisure activities, field trips, educational classes and lunch at senior centers in Brandon, Plant City, Ruskin, Lutz, Wimauma and two locations in Tampa, Riverside and West Shore.

Senior adult day care also is offered at the centers, along with Saturday respite care, in-home and nutrition services and volunteer opportunities. The programs are funded mostly by state and local grants. Some participants pay a fee based on income.

The Senior adult day care program offers health, social, supportive and therapeutic services for seniors and disabled adults. The initiative also provides respite for caregivers.
Adult day care has been shown to delay premature nursing home placement and home care. Hillsborough's program is licensed by the Florida Agency of Health Care Administration and has served county residents since 1976.

Seniors who are slowing down physically, mentally or socially or are showing signs of Alzheimer's disease or dementia are eligible for adult day care. The program is particularly appropriate for families who want their loved ones to remain out of nursing homes as long as possible but are having trouble providing their care.

Participants receive social work counseling, information and referrals, assistance with medication administration, health monitoring and counseling by nurses, meals, snacks, nutrition counseling and opportunities for therapeutic activities. Activities include guest speakers, exercise, arts and crafts, games, poetry reading and writing, current events discussions, intergenerational activities, music, dancing, and birthday and holiday parties.
