VALRICO - Brandon Youth Theatre invites the public to two shows this fall at New Life Church, 2802 State Road 60 E. "Charlotte's Web" will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21, and "Disney's Aladdin Junior" will take place at 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 22.
Karen Kimbro is the director and Karis Denhoff is president of the 27-year-old educational theater's board of directors. Brandon Youth Theatre was founded by Carolyn Scheuer of Riverview.
The actors are enjoying the experience. "You make a lot of friendships that last a long time, not just for the show," said five-year Brandon Youth Theatre veteran Jennifer Morton, 16, of Valrico.
Sixteen-year-old Olivia Denhoff of Plant City said she has learned a lot in the six years she has been with the theater group. "I've really grown as an actor. It's kind of like school, but it's a special school where you get to have fun."

Make It, Bake It, Sew It, Grow It
BRANDON - The Brandon Newcomer's Club's "Make It, Bake It, Sew It, Grow It" auction will be held at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19 at the Brandon Recreation Center, 502 E. Sadie St.
"If you have never been to this annual event, it is a sight to see," said Mary Ann Hartman, the club's publicity coordinator. "You will be amazed at all the talent in our club."
Members bring their homemade items to be sold to the highest bidder. Proceeds fund a scholarship the club awards to a qualified student.
The Brandon Newcomer's Club is open to anyone in the area, not just new residents and not just Brandonites. All are invited to two other upcoming events.
One is a personal tour of Camp Bayou in Ruskin on Nov. 20. Guests will meet at 9 a.m. at the Brandon South Super Target, 10150 Bloomingdale Ave., Riverview. For information or reservations, call Marcia Hunter at (813) 657-2305.

Elks Scholarship Applications Available
BRANDON - The Elks National Foundation is accepting applications for scholarships of up to $60,000 for college-bound high school students. Filling out the applications requires a lot of time, so applicants should start working on them now.
High school seniors may apply for the foundation's Most Valuable Student scholarship, worth from $4,000 to $60,000. The Legacy award of $4,000 will be given to high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of active Elks in good standing.
Applications for either scholarship must be picked up from and returned to the Brandon Elks Lodge No. 2383, 800 Centennial Lodge Drive, Brandon, by Jan. 9.

The Brandon Ladies of the Elks are again offering a scholarship for the "Determined Average Student." Applicants must have a B or C grade-point average and be involved in activities at school and in the community. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15.

Elks Recognize Outstanding Residents
BRANDON - The Brandon Elks Lodge No. 2383 chose a past exalted ruler, Wayne Moon, as its Elk of the Month for September. He participates in the PER Association, and as special events coordinator he schedules lodge events for members and the community.
The Brandon Ladies of the Elks' Lady of Distinction for October is Pat Granger, who helps at the lodge Wednesdays and Fridays and at the monthly Sunday all-you-can-eat breakfasts.
Marvin J. Lopez, chairman of the youth activities committee, announced that Kelly N. Dickerson of Brandon High School was selected the October 2008 Teenager of the Month. Third in her class, Dickerson has a 5.9 weighted grade-point average, has taken nine Advanced Placement courses, is captain of the swim team and is a member of the National Junior Classical League, National Honor Society, KEY Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Hoop Shoot Winners Announced
BRANDON - The finals of the local Elks' Hoop Shoot were held Sept. 27 at Brandon High School. Allie Turley, coach of Brandon's basketball team, and team members helped out at the competition, as did Brandon Elks Ken Waite, Len Brown, Kim Martinez, Tom Tennant, C.J. Hayes, Larry Harris, Joe Pietro, Rick Weigand and Jim Turner.
The winners in the 8- and 9-year-old group were Ryan Davis, Dillon Smith, Alex Brucatto, Marcella Benner, Julia Harbord and Theadra Turaga.
The 10- and 11-year-old winners were Drew Bethoney, Jordon White, Elliott Him, Charia Schultheis and Bailey Dame.
Winners ages 12 and 13 were Patrick Tipaldo, Dylan Dean, Alfred Morales and Rachel Patten.
Trophies and certificates will be awarded to the winners at a special dinner today at the Brandon Elks Lodge, 800 Centennial Drive, Brandon.
Winners will participate in the District Playoffs Jan. 17 at the Lake Placid Elks Lodge, 200 E. County Road 621, Lake Placid.
What Caregivers Need to Know
TAMPA - More than 50,000 people in the Tampa Bay area have Alzheimer's disease, said Mady Ernst, program assistant at the Suncoast Alzheimer's & Gerontology Center, part of the University of South Florida College of Medicine. When the disease strikes a family, everyone's life is affected.
The center invites any family member or friend who is caring for an Alzheimer's patient to a free program called "Alzheimer's Disease: What Caregivers Need to Know" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 20, at the University Village Retirement Center, 12401 N. 22nd St., Tampa. Lunch will be provided.
Speakers will talk about the disease, treatment options, communication, behavior management and legal and financial concerns.

'Into the Woods' Continues to Entertain
BRANDON - Stagedoor Performing Arts will present Stephen Sondheim's musical, "Into the Woods," directed by Domin Pazo, Stagedoor's artistic director, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Nov. 21 and 22 at the Limona Village Chapel United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 408 Limona Road, Brandon.
The play follows the stories of Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and the Baker and his Wife beyond "happily ever after."
Kimberlee Sirvet will play the Baker's Wife; Maren Fernandez will play the Witch; Patrick Brown will be the Wolf; Rick Faurote will depict the Baker; Kasey Todd will be Cinderella; Heather Richardson will play Little Red Riding Hood; Sara Smith will be Rapunzel; James Faurote will play Jack; and Theresa Miller will play Jack's Mother.
Betty Toombs Chester, a Brandon piano teacher and church organist, will accompany the actors.
Stagedoor Performing Arts comprises many talented, veteran actors and is an audition-based, nonprofit community theater that gives adults and children opportunities to learn live theater by performing it on stage.
Tickets are $12 for general admission; $10 for seniors, students and military personnel; free for children age 4 and younger. Members are eligible for discounts. Group rates are available for 10 or more.

Local Veterans, Cadets Plant Flags
TAMPA - The Brandon American Legion Post 278 added 129 American flags to the 4,000 in the Field of Honor at the Veterans Memorial Museum and Park on Oct. 11 in remembrance of the men and women who have given their lives fighting terrorism in the past three months.
Walt Raysick read the names of the 68 who were killed in Afghanistan. Sam Creasman read the names of the 61 killed in Iraq. Jon Mueller read the names of the 28 Special Operations forces who have perished elsewhere since Sept. 11, 2001.
Members of the Armwood High School Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, including cadets Candice Peeler, Angel Foose, Steven Titka, John Hyers, Justin Miller, Josie Huggins and Jassimine Rivera, placed the flags in the Field of Honor and presented the colors during the ceremony.
Sorority Installs New Officers
VALRICO - The Beta Iota Master Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority installed new officers at a meeting in September: Carol Olive, president; Candy McDonald, vice president; Carol Greene, recording secretary; Nancy Bishop, corresponding secretary; Linda Pettis, treasurer; and Beverly Englar, extension officer.
The group, which collects nonperishable food items for the Emergency Care Help Organization, recently held an ice cream social with bunco at Carleen Rice's home.
New Holiday Event At Center Place
BRANDON - Santa's Holiday Workshops for children in kindergarten through grade five and their parents and grandparents will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association, 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon.
Cookie decorating, crafts and coloring pages for the December Coloring Contest will be among the activities of the day. Tickets are $5.50 for Center Place members, $6.50 for nonmembers.
This is a new addition to the usual holiday lineup at Center Place, which includes the Lighting of the Christmas Tree at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and Lunch with Santa at 11 a.m. Dec. 13.
The free Christmas tree lighting ceremony will feature the Brandon Academy Color Guard and performances by local groups, including students from Kim Hall's School of Dance and the Bloomingdale High School Ambassadors show choir under the direction of Beverly Sutherland. Santa and Mrs. Claus will make appearances. Refreshments will be provided by Roundtable Charities of Greater Brandon, previously known as the Presidents' Roundtable. The tree will be lit after a holiday blessing.
Lunch with Santa is for children of all ages. Lunch costs $5.50 per person for members and $6.50 for non-members, regardless of age. Parents must stay with their children. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for photos after lunch. Parents should bring their own cameras. Tickets must be purchased in advance from the Center Place office.
