Nativity Hosts Novemberfest

Ready for some fall fun? Nativity Catholic Church will host its annual Novemberfest, a five-day fall festival for the whole family, starting today.

There will be rides, live entertainment, a baby contest, a local children's dance company performance, food, games and prizes.

The event schedule is: 4 to 11 p.m. today, 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Admission and parking are free. The event will benefit children attending Nativity Catholic School.

Idol Contest Needs Entrants

The Music Showcase will host its annual Idol Contest at 10 a.m. The contest is free and open to performers in three age categories, 8 to 12, 13 to 18 and 19 to adult.

Each group must have at least eight participants, or the contestants will be moved to the closest age category. Participants must bring accompaniment. Live bands and musicians will not be accepted. Prizes will be awarded the day of the contest, and the winners will be awarded a free recording session.

Preregistration is required. Contestants ages 18 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. The Music Showcase is at 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon. Interested participants can call at (813) 685-5998.

Need A Friend? Pets Seek Homes

No More Homeless Pets of Hillsborough County and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mission Orange, will team up to host a free Pet Adoption Expo at the Florida State Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Charles M. Davis Special Events Center, 4800 U.S. 301 N., Tampa.

The one-day event will feature more than 46 animal rescue groups with 400 animals in need of good homes.

There will be demonstrations on behavior and products for sale. Visitors are asked to enter the fairgrounds off Orient Road. Parking is free.

Animals, including puppies and kittens, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. For information, call Lisa Knight at (813) 367-2078 or go to www.tampapets.org.

Season Of Thanks

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 8108 will prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at 7504 Riverview Drive, Riverview.

The meal will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green-bean casserole, cranberry sauce, salad and dinner rolls.

Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item and will receive a slice of pie. Cost is $8 per person. Take-out orders will be available. Call (813) 677-9559.

Child Safety Session Offered

Child Protection Education of America and RadKids will be on hand at Beef O' Brady's, 210 S. Kings Ave., Brandon, from 5 to 8 p.m. to offer free digital fingerprinting and photographing of children to help protect kids from harm.

There will be demonstrations on how to react to potential abductors.

County Offers Water Wisdom

The Hillsborough County Extension Office at 5339 County Road 579, Seffner, joins Hillsborough County Water Resource Services to sponsor a free workshop on the efficient use of water from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 19.

The workshop will include information about creating healthier and more beautiful landscapes, improving lawns, saving time and money and micro-irrigation techniques.

A free starter micro-irrigation kit will be available to county residents. Seating is limited. Preregistration is required. Contact Maria Carver at (813) 744-5519, Ext. 144, or carverms@hillsborough county.org.
