They have been planning for months, rehearsing for almost as long. Including the actors, singers, orchestra and stage hands, some 60 students from Newsome, Durant and Plant City high schools are part of the effort to stage "Pippin" at Tomlin Middle School Theatre beginning tonight.
"These kids have really put their heart and soul into this," says Steve Austin, a drama and English Teacher at Newsome High School and one of the three directors of the play.
Durant's Ed Mason, who also performs in the play as Pippin's father, and Van Frost of Plant City High are also helping direct.
"We have been doing rehearsals seven days a week now for more than a month and some of them have been here for at least part of the rehearsals every day."
Pippin is a coming-of-age story about a young man searching for happiness and the good and bad choices he makes along the way.
The play is set for Nov. 20, 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Shows are also scheduled Dec. 11, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets: Orchestra: $15. General admission: $10. Balcony: $7.
There is a discount for groups of 10 or more. Tickets are available at www.pippin.ticketleap.com and at the door. Performances are all at Tomlin Middle School Theatre, 501 N. Woodrow Wilson St. in Plant City.
