Published: November 26, 2008

They have been planning for months, rehearsing for almost as long. Including the actors, singers, orchestra musicians and stagehands, some 60 students from Newsome, Durant and Plant City high schools are joining forces to stage the musical "Pippin" at Tomlin Middle School Theatre.

"These kids have really put their heart and soul into this," said Steve Austin, a drama and English teacher at Newsome and one of the three play directors.

Teachers Ed Mason of Durant, who also performs in the play as Pippin's father, and Van Frost of Plant City High also are helping direct.

"We have been doing rehearsals seven days a week now for more than a month and some of them have been here for at least part of the rehearsals every day," Austin said.

"Pippin" is a coming-of-age story about a young man searching for happiness and the good and bad choices he makes along the way.
Curtain times are 7 p.m. Dec. 11, 12 and 13 and 2 p.m. Dec. 14. Tickets are $15 for orchestra seats, $10 for general admission and $7 for balcony seats. Performances are all at Tomlin, 501 N. Woodrow Wilson St., Plant City.

The cast is looking for a big crowd at the Dec. 12 show because state judges will be there. If they are impressed, the show will be performed at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in May.

Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets are available at www.pippin.ticketleap.com and at the door.
