Haven Of Hope Benefit Set

Published: October 1, 2008

BRANDON - With the help of a grant from the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, LifeCare of Brandon's board of directors and staff recently were able to design a new brochure and Web site and create new signs for the center reflecting its name change.

The grant also helped the board develop a five-year strategic plan that includes moving forward with efforts to build a Haven of Hope house, a two-year residential facility for pregnant women and women with newborns.

"We're asking the community to partner with us on this project," said executive director Cookie Gray.

Gray said the project has been her longtime dream, and the need for such a home is greater than ever.

"My heart breaks every time we encounter a single mom who needs a place to stay," said LifeCare counselor Karen Brooks. "We need a place for pregnant women who have nowhere else to go, a place where they can have their babies, receive healing, counseling, job training, GED, child care and whatever other help they need until they get back on their feet."

"I believe it's going to happen this time," Gray said. "The time is right. Things are falling into place, and the community is gathering around the effort. I have faith."

Gray said the board is looking for an existing building to renovate or a site to build on.

Residents will learn more about LifeCare's plans for the Haven of Hope at the Gala of Hope fundraising banquet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Tampa Convention Center, 333 S. Franklin St., Tampa.

The event will feature entertainment by Christian recording artist Steve Green. The guest speaker for the evening will be national pro-life advocate Scott Klusendorf.
