Resurrection Catholic Celebrates 25 Years

Published: October 1, 2008

RIVERVIEW - Times were tough during the 1940s. People struggled, but they also came together in unity to face the world's turmoil.
Resurrection Catholic Church wasn't around back then. But, when it formed in 1983, with only about 10 people and little else but faith, the people came together.

With 25 years of history behind it, church members are celebrating by bringing back the 1940s and the joy and cohesiveness those times represent.

To top it off, they'll celebrate their monsignor's Antonio P. Diez 75th birthday.

A big band sound will trumpet throughout the church grounds Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m. for the Jubilant Party, which will also feature a stage show and a magic show with Fritzy the One-Man Circus.

Period costumes, a dinner, two beverage bars and theatrical productions with students from the Spoto High School drama program will run throughout the evening.

"It's a very special occasion, with the anniversary and Father's birthday," said Stacy Feiler, co-organizer of the event. "He's been a priest for almost 50 years now. We wanted to celebrate with the entire community."

Resurrection started as a mission, holding Mass at the Yogi Bear RV Resort on the Alafia River.

"What's so amazing since then is the transition of the community," said Dave Middleton, co-organizer.

The church community, itself, has done much for the homeless and the poor within its reach.

A number of the churches from throughout the area contribute to its food bank, where the poor from Riverview and Gibsonton can go Wednesdays for groceries, prayer and praise songs.

The church is also involved in Project HOPE, a soup kitchen for the poor based in Seffner, and in the Day Star ministry for the homeless in Gibsonton.

"We want to not only help the community, but make them aware of who we are and who we serve," Diez said. "If you love Jesus, you do his work."

For one evening, though, the focus will be on the church and its success through community service.
