SEFFNER - It's not a bridge to nowhere - really.
The Florida Department of Transportation expects a fair amount of foot traffic to take the high road when miles of raised wooden bridges under construction along U.S. 92 are complete.
The boardwalks are part of a $28.2 million project intended to improve safety and traffic flow along a 12.5 mile stretch of U.S. 92 between Eureka Springs and Thonotosassa roads. The boardwalks and sidewalks they will be linked with account for about $4 million of the project cost, said DOT spokeswoman Kris Carson.
Contractors for the state are building the raised footbridges where drainage ditches and creeks prohibit sidewalk construction. Crews also are in the process of regrading the road, improving intersections and upgrading traffic signals.
Carson said project studies determined many people routinely walk to work and school along that mostly rural section of U.S. 92, which runs from Daytona Beach to St. Petersburg.
She said the project will make the road safer for motorists and students who walk or bike to Bryan Elementary, Armwood High, Tomlin Middle, Burnett Middle and Seffner Christian schools. The walkways also will make walking and biking to school safer when a new high school opens next year off McIntosh Road.
The state has no plans to widen the road through 2020. In the meantime, Carson said, "This project will make the area much safer for motorists and pedestrians." Construction is set to wrap in late 2010.
