TAMPA - Members of the Brandon Florida Kennel Club breed and show only purebred canines, but make no bones about it – they do not discriminate against mutts.
The club recently began offering obedience classes for purebred or mixed-breed dogs age 6 months or older at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
Member Shelby Stevens said the group wants to help people who are having trouble training their dogs to behave.
"When you're walking down the street, you want a dog that's with you, not dragging you," Stevens said. "And when a friend walks in the front door, you don't want your dog to knock down their 3-year-old child."
Club members work with individuals and in groups to teach problem-solving, training techniques and the commands sit, stay, down, come and heel.
The next eight-week session starts Nov. 4 and costs $85, with special discounts for dogs adopted from shelters or rescue groups. Classes are from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays.
