PLANT CITY - Touched by the story of 4-year-old Summer Moll, who was critically injured in a wreck that killed her mother, Durant High School students are holding a fundraiser to help.
Tonight at Beef O'Brady's in Valrico, members of the school's athletic program are hosting Spirit Night to raise money for Summer's trust fund. The fund is to help with costs of Summer's medical expenses and rehabilitation.
Summer was injured Sept. 10, when the car driven by her mother, 24-year-old Jennifer O'Boyle of Brandon, was hit head-on by a sports utility vehicle driven by 26-year-old Cheryl Riemann. Authorities said Riemann was driving with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit and was headed in the wrong direction on the Selmon Crosstown Expressway.
O'Boyle died, and Summer suffered critical injuries. They were on their way to the beach when their car was hit near the expressway's 78th Street toll plaza.
Riemann, a Ruskin resident, was being held without bail last week at Orient Road Jail on charges that include driving while intoxicated manslaughter.
As part of Durant's monthly Success 101 program, which features a different visitor talking to Cougar athletes, Summer's grandmother Tammy Rosian delivered a moving speech.
"She talked to our kids, parents and coaches about how the choices we make can affect the lives of others," Durant boys basketball coach Jeff Shotwell said.
The restaurant at State Road 60 and Miller Road will donate 20 percent of food purchases to Summer's trust fund.
"All people need to do is tell the waitress they are there for the Spirit Night," Shotwell said. He said he hopes to create a pep rally environment.
There will be a disc jockey playing music and a drawing for prizes, the big one being an Apple iPod touch. Durant cheerleaders will be on hand.
The event goes from 5 to 9 p.m.
