Equestrians Take Over At The Fairgrounds

The Florida Quarter Horse Association will host its annual Labor Day weekend circuit horse show in the covered ring at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center Friday through Sunday.

Classes for Western and English disciplines are open to youth, novice and amateur riders ages 8 and older. Prizes will be awarded for each class and event. Hours vary daily.

Entry fees and stall rental charges apply for participants. Admission and parking are free for spectators. Visitors should enter the fairgrounds via the Orient Road entrance. Go to www.fqha.net or call Peg Edmondson at (941) 484-4687.

Find The Hidden Treasure

The Greater Brandon Arts Council and Brandon League of Fine Arts will sponsor Bring Art Alive ... Find The Hidden Treasures of Greater Brandon, a free event, from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

There will be art exhibitions, performances, music and art demonstrations at various locations. Final activities and drawings will take place at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association from 5 to 7 p.m.

To be considered in the drawings, participants must pick up programs at each of the following locations and have each stamped:

Nonstop Music, Comedy and Dancing

Enjoy an afternoon of entertainment as the Brandon Elks Lodge hosts Timebomb beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The show band will perform music from the 1950s and '60, a country music revue, rock 'n' roll and tributes to Elvis and Patsy Cline. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $10 per person. The lodge is at 800 Centennial Lodge Drive, Brandon. Call (813) 685-6469 for tickets and information.

Start Storing Goodies, Essentials For Troops

The GFWC Brandon Junior Woman's Club is getting ready to launch its annual Operation Holiday Support to benefit U.S. military troops.

Supplies to be collected Oct. 1 to Nov. 30 include black socks, gel insole heels, shaving gel, wrapped hard candy, prepackage snacks, Advil and Tylenol, mouthwash, over the counter cold and flu tablets, toothpaste, Clorox wipes, inflatable pillows, travel games, cotton swabs, nonreflective sunglasses, lip balm, deodorant, Febreeze, beef jerky, AA batteries, throat lozenges, eye drops, power bars, Pop-Tarts, dryer sheets, peanuts, dried fruit, DVD movies and other nonperishable items. Donations can be dropped off at the following locations:

Old-Time Sock Hop To Benefit Schools

Get out your poodle skirts and pocket combs for the Riverview Memorial VFW Post 8108 Ladies Auxiliary's Back to School Sock Hop to benefit area schools in need of supplies from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 13.

There will be a door prize, dance and Hula Hoop contests, a cake walk and a competition for best original dress.

Cost is $7 and includes dinner. Guests are asked to bring classroom supplies for area schools in exchange for a free root beer float. The post is at 7504 Riverview Drive, Riverview.
