Veterans To Remember Sept. 11 Victims

The Hillsborough County Veterans Affairs Office and the Hillsborough County Veterans Council will honor the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, at a ceremony starting at 10 a.m Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S 301 N., Tampa.

Free Expo Targets Diabetes Awareness

Health care experts with the American Diabetes Association will offer people with diabetes and those caring for diabetics helpful information and screenings at the Tampa Diabetes Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall.

Information, screenings, products and demonstrations related to diabetes will be available. Speakers will discuss prevention, treatment options, making healthy meals, getting and staying fit, losing weight and improving sleep habits.

Workshops will be offered in Spanish from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Children's activities will include games and face painting.

The expo is free and open to the public. Parking is $5 for cars and $10 for RVs and buses. The fairgrounds are at 4800 U.S. 301 N., Tampa. Visitors are asked to enter at the U.S. 301 entrance. For information, call (813) 885-5007 or go to www.diabetes.org/tampa expo.

VFW Helps Schools With Sock Hop

Get out your poodle skirts and pocket combs for the Riverview Memorial VFW Post 8108 Ladies Auxiliary's Back to School Sock Hop to benefit area schools in need of supplies from 6 to 7 p.m.

There will be a door prize, dance and hula hoop contests, a cake walk and a competition for best original dress. Cost is $7 and includes dinner.

Workshop On Tap For The Water Wise

The Hillsborough County Extension Office at 5339 County Road 579, Seffner, joins Hillsborough County Water Resource Services to sponsor free workshops on the efficient use of water.

The workshops will include information about efficient use of water for healthier and more beautiful landscapes, improving lawns, saving time and money and micro-irrigation techniques.

A free starter micro-irrigation kit will be available to all Hillsborough County residents attending the workshop. Residents from outside Hillsborough will be charged $20 for the kit. The workshops will be from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 25, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 28 and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 19.

Start Storing Goodies, Essentials For Troops

The GFWC Brandon Junior Woman's Club is getting ready to launch its annual Operation Holiday Support to benefit U.S. military troops.

Supplies to be collected Oct. 1 to Nov. 30 include black socks, gel insole heels, shaving gel, wrapped hard candy, prepackage snacks, Advil and Tylenol, mouthwash, over the counter cold and flu tablets, toothpaste, Clorox wipes, inflatable pillows, travel games, cotton swabs, nonreflective sunglasses, lip balm, deodorant, Febreeze, beef jerky, AA batteries, throat lozenges, eye drops, power bars, Pop-Tarts, dryer sheets, peanuts, dried fruit, DVD movies and other nonperishable items. Donations can be dropped off at the following locations:
